Innovation, Multi-use Bicycle

A locally built, multi-purpose bike that grinds, carries, and powers small livelihoods, designed with rural realities in mind.

Why innovation matters for Social Seed

We design tools that solve everyday challenges. The multi-use bicycle is a low-cost, maintainable machine that helps families grind, mill, and transport produce, saving time, creating value and unlocking income opportunities.

What the bike does

  • Pedal-powered grinding: Process maize, peanuts and coffee without electricity.
  • Load & carry design: Built-in rack for market transport and small deliveries.
  • Micro-enterprise ready: Enables mobile services and value-add production.
  • Easy local repair: Designed to be fixed with common village tools.

Early impact

Riders report 40% time savings on processing tasks, first micro-sales from peanut paste in 3 months, and improved school attendance where girls used saved time for schoolwork.

Multi-use bicycle prototype

See it in action

How it started

The idea began when community members asked for a way to process produce without costly fuel or long trips to town. We prototyped a pedal-driven grinder using recycled bicycle parts and local metalwork, the result is rugged, affordable, and co-created with the users.

Next: scale pilot sites, document repair manuals, and seed local micro-franchises to sustain production and maintenance.

Partner with us

We want partners for material sourcing, testing sites, and distribution pilots. If you build, fund or promote locally-made tools, let's talk.
